8th Shawwal- Jannat ul Baqee (On the destruction of Holy Shrines)

8th Shawwal- Jannat ul Baqee (On the destruction of Holy Shrines)

Jannat ul Baqee (جنة البقيع) “Tree Garden of Heaven” is a famous cemetery in the holy city of Madinah in Saudi Arabia. This piece of land is located right across Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) masjid– Masjid al-Nabawai. It is well known since many of Prophet Muhammad’s relatives and companions are buried here, and due to its sanctity. Many traditions relate the Prophet(pbuh) issuing a prayer every time he passed the cemetery. The cemetery houses graves of a number of members of the Ahlul-Bayt(as) including four Imams, Imam Hassan bin Ali (as), Imam Ali bin Husain (as), Imam Mohammad bin Ali (as), Imam Jafar bin Mohammad (as) & Fatima binte Asad (mother of Imam Ali (a.s.)). Syeda Fatima Zahra (sa) is buried in an unknown location, possibly in Jannatul Baqi itself, inside the masjid close to the Prophet’s(pbuh) grave or a location between the Prophet’s pulpit and His grave which the Prophet(sa) referred to as a piece of garden from paradise. Till today, thousands of pilgrims come to this holy cemetery and give their respects to Syeda(sa) and the Imams(as). These graves were demolished by King Ibn Saud on 8th of Shawwal 1345 (AH) April 21, 1925. Many Muslims continue to mourn the day that the House of Saud demolished graves in the Baqi cemetery, calling this day Yaum e Gham, literally meaning Day of Sorrow. They continue to protest the Saudi government’s continuous demolition of shrines and ancient mosques in Saudi Arabia. In the same year, King Saud (1925) also demolished the tombs of holy personalities at Jannat al-Mualla (Makkah, Saudi Arabia)– the 2nd most sacred cemetary. A partial list of the demolished graves and shrines al-Mualla graveyard includes the grave sites of: 1.Sayyida Khadija bint Khuwailid (a) wife of the Prophet (s) 2.Amina bint Wahab, mother of the Prophet (s) 3.Abu Talib father of Imam Ali (a) & uncle of the Prophet(s) 4.Abdul Muttalib grandfather of the Prophet (s) and many more ancestors.
